Part 3 of Seeing Machines' Technical Paper Series – Intoxication explores how Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) can work together to better understand driver impairment and support safer intervention strategies.
While traditional approaches to intoxication often focus on chemical concentration thresholds, Part 3 of our Technical Paper Series – Intoxication argues that real-time driving risk is more meaningfully assessed through a driver’s observed behaviour and the context in which that behaviour occurs. Building on the foundations established in Parts 1 and 2, the paper explores why a more integrated understanding of driver state and driving environment is critical when addressing complex impaired states.
The third and final paper in this series highlights how intoxication can present in different ways, from drowsiness and distraction to impaired coordination and unstable attention. As a result, the most appropriate response is not determined solely by the cause of impairment, but by the risk it creates in a given driving situation.
By combining insights from Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) with contextual awareness provided by Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), future vehicle safety systems can better assess risk and deliver interventions that are timely, proportionate and appropriate to the situation. This approach supports a more cooperative relationship between driver and vehicle, helping keep drivers engaged when possible while enabling vehicles to provide greater support when necessary.
The paper concludes that integrating awareness of both driver state and driving conditions represents a significant step forward in addressing real-world impairment and improving road safety outcomes.
