Why Human Factors is fundamental to DMS

00:14
Human Factors is absolutely critical when designing technology like driver monitoring to support people.

00:20
The Human Factors research gives us the in-depth understanding of human behaviour as it occurs in the real world, and those insights are fed directly to support our product and feature design. And it’s this type of research that has really driven our transition in recent years from eye tracking to driver and occupant monitoring.

DMS fundamental to improved safety

00:45
Seeing Machines is unique in that it recognised very early on that human behaviour is complex and challenging and that we needed Human Factors research to understand the differences between driving a car, a truck or flying a plane.

00:59
For many years we’ve been investing in Advanced Research internally and with world experts around the world. That’s a key part of our approach to technology design.

Reducing road related trauma

01:12
Driver monitoring is as important a safety technology as the three point seat belt implemented in the late 1950s and random breath testing in the decades after that. And the reason is simple. It is the only way to address in real time, long-standing safety issues such as distraction and drowsiness. Thousands of lives can be saved around the world.

In 2021, I estimate that at least 10% of fatalities, which would be 4,500 in the United States and 2,000 in Europe, could be prevented if all vehicles were fitted with driver monitoring technology. Notwithstanding, of course, the thousands of serious injuries that would also be prevented.

This technology is being regulated worldwide. And it’s clear why. We’re absolutely in the era of driver and occupant monitoring technology.
