On Futuro 360 from CNN Chile, Dr Mike Lenné discussed the growing global focus on driver monitoring technology and its role in helping to address two of the most complex risks on our roads: fatigue and distraction. The conversation explored how road safety is shifting from looking only at what happens outside the vehicle to also understanding what is happening inside it, particularly when a driver’s attention, alertness or cognitive state may create risk. 

Mike explained that Human Factors research sits at the centre of Seeing Machines’ approach. By combining more than two decades of research into human behaviour with advanced sensing and artificial intelligence, the Company’s technology is designed to detect signs of fatigue and distraction in real time and support drivers when they need it most. The interview also emphasised that camera-based driver monitoring is a safety solution, not a surveillance tool, with data captured only around safety-relevant events rather than through continuous recording. 

The discussion highlighted the increasing importance of driver monitoring technology as global regulation accelerates, including in Europe and through United Nations frameworks. With fatigue and distraction contributing to a significant proportion of serious and fatal crashes, Mike described driver monitoring as a major opportunity to reduce road trauma and help more people get home safely. Looking ahead, he framed the future of vehicle safety as collaborative, with technology increasingly supporting drivers rather than replacing them.
